So, your podcast is up and running. Downloads are looking good. Audience engagement is ok, but email collection is virtually non-existent. What’s the problem?
It’s time to look at your email collection methods.
Just putting a generic “Sign up for our newsletter” on your website will probably net you a total of zero real subscribers. You may get a spammer to sign up.
Why doesn’t this work?
You haven’t proven that you are giving away anything of value in exchange for their email. No one needs more junk in their inbox.
Creating a highly desirable lead magnet will change your numbers!
Step 1: Find out what your avatar needs most.
To completely change the paradigm, look at your niche. What are the top 3 problems that your avatar faces each day? Don’t know? Do a quick Google search of it and see what you find. Talk to people that are your target listener and ask them.
Step 2: Follow steps below to create a desirable lead magnet in just 4 hours.
- Block off 2 chunks of time (at least 2 hours) on 2 consecutive days.
- Use the first block of time to research these top 3 problems. You are looking for answers. You are digging through articles and columns and other research journals to find information that will solve the main problems your avatar faces.
- The second day, during your 2 hour block, you need to write your own article about the findings of your research, that will solve one of these main problems that your avatar has.
- You can call it a report, a checklist, an article, a white paper or whatever you want. This is now your lead magnet. This is what you are giving people in exchange for their email address. Wouldn’t you take free help for the top problem you are facing everyday?
Step 3: Begin promoting your lead magnet on every podcast.
Make an easy to remember pretty link for your opt in url and begin promoting. Put a widget for it on your website. Promote, promote, promote.
When you write your show notes for your episodes, be sure to link back to the opt in in any situation where someone could get more information by consuming the content of your opt in.
Step 4: If organic reach is not building your email list fast enough, then you should consider using FB ads to drive people to your opt in.
I DON’T recommend using FB ads to get people to like, listen, or go to your website. The ONLY way to get a return on your FB ads investment is to collect an email address.
Using these methods, you should be able to significantly increase the size of your email list within the next 90 days.
Your email list is the lifeline of your business.
Want to go a step further? Create 3 different highly desirable lead magnets using this same process and then begin testing which one gives you the most email opt ins. You can even test the titles of your opt in and test to see which one converts better.
Always experiment so you have the data to show you what works best for your business and for your audience. Don’t guess – test!
